I gave a concert at the Reykjavik Jazz Festival last Monday. I was presenting my new album "The Dream" with an Icelandic version of the quartet. Scott and I had 3 rehearsals with bassist Þorgrímur Jónsson and saxophonist Óskar Guðjónsson. When you change half the members of a jazz quartet the music unavoidable takes on a new shape with the personalities of the new members, (and these guys have great personalities). Therefor there was a sense of freshness and excitement around the performance.

Last week I wrote a blogpost "Coincidences with a Purpose?" about events leading up to my trio's recording in the town of Seyðisfjörður (population under 800). I always enjoy traveling with a band and especially to the small towns in Iceland. There is a certain sense of calm in these towns, a charm to the old houses and narrow streets and not to mention the beauty of the surrounding mountains and fjords. (read more…)

Several months ago, before I knew how busy my summer would be, I scheduled a trio recording in the east of Iceland in August, about a day's drive from Reykjavik (where I live). The other members of the trio, Þorgrímur Jónsson (pronounced Thorgrimur or just Toggi) and Scott McLemore had played at a church in the town of Seyðisfjörður and thought that the acoustics were amazing. We got ourselves booked on the church's concert series and planned to record the day after. Well then summer hit. I was releasing "The Dream" and touring in the US, my girls were off from school and before I knew it it was August and time to go record. Where the hell did the time go? I'm not ready! I have been playing on swings and slides lately and not the piano. (read more…)

What a great season summer is. The sun is shining and my balcony is blooming with fresh herbs. I love it! On top of that my new album "The Dream" is also blooming on US and Canadian radio. I'm so thrilled. It jumped straight to #20 on CMJ jazz chart and straight to #3 on jazz radio in Canada. I'm so glad that the two days I spent stuffing envelopes and putting 5 stamps on each one is paying off. To celebrate it I am doing a 2 day summer sale "Pay What You Want – No Minimum" for all my albums on bandcamp including "The Dream" The sale ends August 1st 2010. (read more…)

Day 5, Saturday June 19th. New York to CT

Read Part 1 | Part 2| Part 3

We thought we were giving ourselves plenty of time when we left NY at 3pm but apparently everybody else in New York decided to leave the city at the same time and head up to Maine. Traffic was insane…. like a continuation from the previous night where it took us 3 hours to get from just outside the Lincoln Tunnel to Brooklyn. (read more…)

Day 4, Friday June 18th. Baltimore to New Jersey. A Day of Driving.

Go to Part 1 | Part 2

Driving to New York today was pretty smooth. IMG_0504We were shocked by how much we had to pay in road tolls and glad we didn't hit much traffic. We dropped Loren off in Brooklyn since he had another gig that night. We drove around the old hood a little, past our old apt. building and ended up having a great lunch at the V spot on 5th Avenue. Day Two and Three. Thursday June 18th. Baltimore

It is amazing how hard it is to find the time to even maintain a blog while on the road and not to mention a internet connection. Sadly our car doesn't come equipped with on.

So Wednesday was our day off, sort of, in Baltimore. Unfortunately instead of chillin' we spent it stuffing 460 envelops with CDs and info sheet to send to radio stations in the US. (read more…)

JazzSessionThere is so much going on right now. I'm ecstatic to announce that we reached our Kickstarter goal with the help of 64 generous and wonderful people. I am expecting copies of my new CD "The Dream" today and tomorrow I leave for a short US tour. The CD will be available for order here on June 17th or if you are in the Baltimore area you could come get your own copy at An Die Musik that evening or any of the following performances.

Today I am very fortunate to be featured on The Jazz Session with Jason Crane. I love the teaser that he sent out on Twitter. "Which Icelandic pianist got into jazz through Kool and The Gang?" That's right! I was a Kool and The Gang fan and you can hear me talk about that in this interview and also hear samples from the new CD. Download The Jazz Session podcast or just listen to it online here.
