One from the vault... Almost a decade after my 2nd CD "Mindful" was recorded, 5 Icelandic folk songs played by the same quartet (Tony Malaby, Drew Gress and Scott McLemore) on the same day is finally being released (Feb, 21st 2009). For those of you who knew about the lost tracks, the wait is over, but for most people this is a new discovery. Anyone who enjoyed Mindful would probably love this one.

"Beautiful world." Music to Icelandic poetry.

Recorded on 10.2 & 3.02 by Ari Daníelsson in Salurinn, Iceland. Mixed by Jon Rosenberg at Good and Evil, New York Mastered by Michael MacDonald at Algorhythms, New York

This was recorded at one of the nicest concert halls in Iceland... not live. We turned the hall into a makeshift recording studio with baffles, but Ari was still able to get that concert-hall ambience. We were in Iceland performing at the Reykjavik Jazz Festival at the time, and Leni Stern stopped by with a crew from BET on Jazz for an interview. So somewhere there's some footage of the session.

This was a very different project for me, writing music to poetry and also writing some lyrics myself. I even got my mother to write some.

Probably one of the most intense, exciting, and most productive recording sessions I've done. The energy in this quartet was very special. The music just seemed to flow effortlessly. We were able to record 14 tunes in one day (see 'Songs from Iceland' above), and Joe and Nancy at Systems Two were incredibly accommodating and made everyone as comfortable as possible.

$6.93
  • Featuring:
  • Sunna Gunnlaugs - piano

  • Scott McLemore - drums

Recorded on 3.23 & 27.97 by Steve Davis, NY

This was my first recording session (back when I was still using my full name). I was freshly graduated from William Paterson College (where I met Dan and Scott). The trio was busy playing every club, restaurant, cafe or bookstore in the northeast that would have us. We covered a lot of territory, both geographically and musically. This recording is a combination of arrangements of standards that we developed and original tunes by myself and Scott.
